How to Mod Minecraft
64
Why Use Mods?
Let's say you've been playing Minecraft for a while now. You like it but it's lost it's appeal. That certain spark it once had is now fading away. Well don't despair! That's what mods are for. There a plenty of mods out there to spice up your game and make the experience a whole lot more exciting. The only problem is, how do i install them?
- WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files
WinRAR provides the full RAR and ZIP file support, can decompress CAB, GZIP, ACE and other archive formats
What Software Will I Need?
To open the minecraft.jar (the file all the mods will be stored in) you will need either WinRAR or 7zip, i recommend WinRAR since i don't use 7zip.
What if it all goes wrong?!
I suggest before applying any mods to your vanilla (non modded) game, you back up your worlds in case they get corrupted. These are located in the 'saves' folder in '.minecraft'. And If you want a clean vanilla 'minecraft.jar', before entering username and password in the minecraft launcher click options and force update.
How to Install the Mods
Once you have WinRAR installed open up your start menu and in the search box type %appdata% (windows XP users might need to use the RUN program instead). This will open a folder called roaming. From here you need to go to '/.minecraft/bin.' This is where WinRAR comes into play. Right click minecraft.jar and select 'open with > WinRAR Archiver' The files will be revealed just like in a folder, but inside the WinRAR client. Open your internet browser and download the desired mod, then extract the ZIP file into a folder. There should be a load of .class files. Simply copy and paste these from the folder into minecraft.jar and delete the META-INF folder. Some more complex mods may require you to read the readme for extra steps, but this should work for most major mods.
Thanks for your interest,
and happy modding!
